  AN EXPLANATION

As authors and educators we believe that little has more importance than reading.

We believe in the value of adults reading to children.

All About a Foot Soldier is written with those premises in mind. This book is not made to be presented to a child with the expectation that he or she will drop to the floor and read it. Soldier breaks too many literary rules for that certainty. For example:

Within children's book publishing, it is believed axiomatic that only one concept per page be offered. Soldier may have many concepts per page.

Printing, it is said, must be standardized so that various forms of lettering will not confuse the child reader. One glance at this book will demonstrate the shattering of this rule.

Then there is the subject matter. In 1965, soldiers were popular and respected. In our households, they still are. Unfortunately, current political correctness often precludes the use of words (concepts) like Soldier, Battle, Spear, Club, Helmet, Uniform, King, Army, and Outpost. Not here. This book is filled with those worldly usages.

All About a Foot Soldier was written just before the author retired from a twenty-year US Army career. It was created for a recently adopted boy-child and has since been cherished by three generations of that family. The book has been and still is read by the family parents to their children and more recently to grandchildren and even great grandchildren. We know that it is enjoyed because the inevitable request upon completion is, "Let's do it again."

The author and publishers visualize the grownup with the child nestled closely reading and turning pages while pointing out the "funny things."

All About a Foot Soldier works when used that way, and we anticipate that you in turn will hug your child closely, read, point, and giggle through more than one generation of entertained and perhaps devoted readers.
